This morning my mom called to let me know that my bank had called their house wanting to talk to me about some strange charges. I gave them a call back, gave them my card number, and, as it turns out, there were a string of weird charges on the Internet that I never made. They told me they were cancelling my card and that I would be getting a new one in about a week. The first, obvious wave of paranoia (maybe I should never use my debit card ever again!) was followed immediately by a more rampant paranoia, wherein I thought that the person I had talked to on the phone had not been from my bank at all, and had used identity theft as a pretext for theiving my identity. It took twenty minutes on the phone with my branch (who, in my defense, didn't really seem to understand what I was asking them) before I sorted out that it was in fact a legitimate number I had called, and I had in fact been thieved. So, I guess I've settled back into the calmer first-stage paranoia. Ah, the perils of the modern age. As the suspiciously nice lady on the phone told me, this sort of thing happens every day. What should I do? Do I actually not use my card anymore? How would that even work? I haven't carried cash in like eight years. I guess if the system is so sharp as to catch these charges before they even go through, I should feel at least some level of comfort. Clearly they're looking out for me. But, as I'm sure you'll realize, I'm still going to be pretty nervous. I can just hear Wendy now- "Oh, great, you really need something else to be nervous about." In other news, how the fuck about Sanjaya, huh? |
| Andria April 19, 2007 01:48 PM PDT I'm somewhat relieved to hear that you're still up for Idol chit-chat even in light of the thievery... First thing I'd do would be to get a credit report from all three bureaus and make sure everything looks okay... | ||
